Mapping the flood
Filed under Uncategorized by damon kiesow at 1:41 pm
We are having a fairly busy (but thankfully dry) day at the paper
today - but I could not let our first Google Maps mashup pass without
comment:
A mashup is simply the combination of a Google Map with another source of data - in this case flooded roads.
Mashups are getting a lot of attention lately, some like Chicago Crime are obviously news oriented and packed with useful information. Others - such as the Gawker Stalker, not so much.
There are even blogs dedicated to this phenomenon, such as Google Maps Mania. Check it out for a wide selection of different projects.
We have been working with the mapping technology for a few weeks and thinking about stories or topics we could use with it. This morning we realized the flood was probably one of those stories. Our New Media Director, Ernesto Burden threw some code together and voila! We hope to use more of these maps on the site in the coming months, let us know how they work for you.
