Newspapers matter

If there is one things newspapers do not do well - it is telling their own stories. Newspapers, or at least local journalism does matter to people and is an integral part of most local communities.

The Telegraph is launching a bit of a public awareness campaign to talk about some of the things the paper does to be part of our community. As part of the campaign Chief Photographer Don Himsel produced this short video:

Perrine wins regional Photographer of the Year

Telegraph staff photographer Corey Perrine is the 2008 National Press Photographers Association Region One Photographer of the Year following his victory in the group’s year-long monthly clips contest.
Perrine competed with photographers from across New England by entering photographs published in the newspaper each month.

I spent the morning at the New England New Media Association workshop in Lowell Mass. Steve Garfield, video blogger extraordinaire was on the opening panel discussion and hit me with a 30-second live streaming interview to demonstrate the technology:

Preparing for a post-AP era

Given the shrinking news hole many of us are experiencing, we are using less and less AP content, and paying more and more for the privilege. The Telegraph recently moved from a four-section to a two-section format, loaded with local news in the front section. As a result, we are now using only the top two or three world/nation stories of the day, along with a package of briefs.
