Google News Archive launches

Filed under Uncategorized by damon kiesow at 6:04 am

A new product launched last night: Google News Archive, formerly known as Google Premium.

You can see the full press release below - but the basics are: the Google News search now includes links to paid archives from selected newspapers around the country.

The Telegraph is part of this new effort - and you can see how useful it might be via a quick search on today’s top news - Dr Julia Earl

Thatlink takes you to all of our stories on Dr Earl from 2005. Stories fromother newspapers and other years are also available.

Google isable to serve up these results as the result of a collaboration withour archive provider Newsbank, who also host the archive search resultswithin our Web site. The Google search opens up the archive to amuch broader audience, and makes it much easier to search for olderstories across multiple newspapers.

The announcement from Google is below:

———–

Thank you for working with us and providing your content for the initiative that we have discussed as Google Premium. Today, we launched an evolution of that initiative as an archive search feature on Google News. With this feature users will be able to find your content and link to your landing pages — and, of course, buy your content or subscribe to your services. A few additional points on this release:

* As the name suggests, it contains content that is primarily historical in nature.
* The archive search feature on Google News includes both paid content as well as content that is freely available on the web. By including both, we believe that more people will use this feature and discover your content.
* We have developed some new functionality to suggest key dates in which a particular term or story has a significant number of results, and we have added new time-based navigational tools to help users find the articles that are most relevant to their searches.

From Google.com, users may see archive search results at the bottom of the page marked with an hourglass icon. From the Google News site, users will see a ‘News Archive Search’ link on the homepage.

We are excited about this launch. We hope you find this new initiative exciting and useful in your efforts to distribute and sell your content.

Cheers,

The Google Team
