Fun with PHP or How I learned to stop worrying and avoid crufty URLs

Damon | 24 May, 2006 20:18 | (540)

Wow - since no one is going to get past the title, except our science/tech writer Dave Brooks, just a short update on some changes to the blogs today.

For those who notice such things - the URLs for our blogs changed today - just slightly.

For instance this blog now lives at: http://blogs.nashuatelegraph.com/web_notes

Instead of : http://blogs.nashuatelegraph.com/index.php?blogId=1

Not a huge difference to most people - but it is to search engines such as Google and Technorati. It means, hopefully, that posts and messages on this site will be found and indexed more frequently, which means more readers can find and join our conversations.

This is all part of our attempts at Search Engine Optimization, or SEO for those who love to mask their jargon in acronyms.

So, to thrown some more jargon around: These blogs are powered by Lifetype, and we upgraded the URLs it produces using Apache mod-rewrite rules, and some hacks to the core Lifetype PHP classes.

Needless to say, everything I know about .htaccess is what I can find via Google searching, but voila, after some frantic moments, and a message to the Lifetype support forums, it works!

Share and enjoy.
