Here comes the wedding!

I said yes to Ed’s proposal on March 24, 2007, in front of the Bean in Chicago’s Millennium Park.
What I should have said was, “Let’s elope.”
Planning a wedding is a full time job and, since most of us don’t hire a wedding coordinator, it becomes a second shift of sorts. Time once spent relaxing, exercising and socializing with friends has now become monopolized by the hunt for the perfect reception site, the quest to look like an 80s supermodel by next year and the walk along the tightrope of family politics.
A little background: Ed will bring three children to the mix: Pete, 18, Molly, 15, and Emily 12. Each his/her own person with different expectations on how us “old” folk should embark on our entrance to wedded bill. Molly has courteously planned a $10,000 honeymoon for us in Belize. Pete is focused on getting to college before wedding mania hits full force and Emily isn’t really sure she wants this to happen at all
In the meantime, after a few shell-shocked months of breaking the news to family and friends, Ed and I began to plan our wedding. The first thing we realized: There are a lot of different options out there. The second thing: It’s really expensive.
It took two months of Internet research before Ed and I were ready to go looking at reception halls. That’s where we’re at now, visiting different venues each week, looking for a casual, fun place where family and friends can gather and have a real celebration.
I’d like to invite you to join me once a week as a safari through the jungle called the wedding industry in search of affordable receptions, a great dress, a happy family and whatever other miracles I decide I need to make the day complete.
