Virtual paper dolls for your inner child

My little sister was logging some serious time on the computer the other night, to the extent that my mother’s polite requests for her to sign off and get ready for bed fell on deaf ears and she finally had to yell.
When Younger Sister scurried away to put on her PJs, I checked out the Web site she had been on to see what was so absorbing. Which led to Mom, Younger Sister, and myself spending the next hour on www.barbie-dressupgames.com.
This, I’m learning, is one of the difficult things about being an adult. It’s hard to put your foot down and declare that playtime is over for the evening when, at heart, you’d really like to be playing yourself.
The dress-up Web site was recommended to my sister by a friend of hers and features more than just Barbie. Some of the virtual dolls really are Barbie, but most fall into the cutesy anime girl category. And it goes beyond dressing up a single girl doll - there are couple dress-up games, wedding dress-up, hairstyling challenges, the works. You could seriously lose an afternoon on this site.
Here are a few of my favorites:
- Couple of Dolls Shopping. The clothes are cute and stylish, plus they’re interchangeable, so the guy can borrow his girlfriend’s hat (or even her hairstyle) and the girl can wear his jacket or necklace. I wonder if she’d let me borrow her little black dress.
- Romantic Proposal. Not only can you change the couple’s clothing and hair colors, you can also change the gift he’s giving her and the background. Does that diamond look too small? Just click to bump it up a couple carats.
- Couple in Space. This out-there concept is bested only by the game’s description: “Get ready for the coolest date in space. Dress up this couple for the ultimate date on a rocket ship.” Well, that’s almost what the description says - just replace the “p” in “ship” with a “t.” T and P are pretty far apart on the keyboard, so I’m assuming the creator of this game is not a native English speaker. Also, the game’s Korean lettering is kind of a giveaway.
- Vietnamese wedding outfits. This one features just the bride. I can’t get the jewelry and accessories to work, but you can still play with hair, makeup, and clothes. The traditional Vietnamese wedding outfits are gorgeous.
- Wedding Ceremoy. I know, it’s missing an “n” - I’m just spelling it the way it’s spelled on the Web site for easier reference. This one is actually a game, where you score points based on how well you put together your bride or groom and progress through different levels with different dolls and clothes. I made it all the way to level two before I accidentally hit the “done” button and lost. This game features traditional Hindi wedding clothes - super pretty.
- And last but not least, Pilgrim Thanksgiving. Points for style, but a total failure when it comes to historical accuracy. The designer apparently confused 17th century Plymouth, Mass., with Versailles.
New games are added almost daily, and they have some really neat-looking ones with Halloween costumes that I haven’t had a chance to play with yet. I think I know how Mom, Younger Sister, and I will be spending our evening.
