What’s in a name?

Filed under Uncategorized by karen lovett at 6:06 pm

So, I started this post intending to talk about my latest reality TV obsession, "Project Runway."  I was planning to guess the final three (Christian, Jillian and Rami…sorry Chris!) and even go so far as to predict the winner (Christian…sorry Jillian!)

But show me something shiny and I’m distracted.  In this case, a co-worker moseyed on over and somehow, we got on the subject of name generators.  All of a sudden, I’m no longer Karen. I’m "Cap’n Doris Greasepalms" …

… at least, according to this name generator.

I’ve always had a thing for names.  I love learning about why people are called what they are.  I love that some people carry names forward for their family’s sake.  I love that names often have deeper meaning, that many are rooted in other cultures or derived from something else.

My first name, for example, is of Danish origin and is derived from "Katherine" and means "pure."  (Uhhh…) My middle name is "Eve," after my grandmother, Evelyn.  It means "mother of the earth" — kind of a heavy burden for insignificant me.  My maiden name, "Sanborn", means "of the sand dune."

So, somehow, I was meant to be a pure, earthy gal from some kind of beach.

Anyway, the obsession goes way back.  I’m the kind of girl who’s thought about what to name her children since Barbie-hood.  A co-worker at a former paper and I were obsessed with the birth announcement section.  Every week, we’d revel in the oddities.  (I even kept the list…how about "Raiven Mysteek?"  Or, no kidding, "Fire Fairy"?)

Back to my point.  Imagine my excitement with these newfound name generators!  (Right.  I am way behind the curve with most technological revolutions.) They’re all over the Web!  I could spend hours punching in my given name in exchange for "Cap’n Doris Greasepalms," my pirate name, or "Lucia the Gun," my mafia name found here.

Here are a few other sites and results for my name.  Go find yours!  And share!
