Reality check

I know you”ll think less of me now, but I am mildly wildly obsessed with reality TV.
(I know what you’re thinking - "JenO, we didn’t think that much of you to begin with.")
I can’t help it. I am already sucked into the new season of "American Idol." Did anyone else notice Simon smile when that one backup singer sang? Pia? or Zpia? I bet she’s a lock for the top 10. Plus, I loved her. I’m not the only one who thinks she’s one to watch, either.
And then over on "The Amazing Race," all the teams have been "philiminated," as my friends say, except the final three. Next episode is the grand finale, and I would be OK with any of the finalists winning, although I think I am most impressed with the granola couple, TK and Rachel. I mean, they didn’t even really know each other that well. Looking over my last few early dates, I can’t say I would be willing to embark on a global race with any of them. But it is cool to see how father-daughter team Ron and Christina now interact. In early episodes, I could barely contain my anger over how Ron would talk to his daughter, but now it seems like he treats her with more respect. And she is pretty awesome. Rounding out the final three are grandfather-grandson Nicolas and Donald, and I love them just because they really seem to be enjoying themselves. Which is how it should be.
I was reminded the "Rock of Love II" is already under way. Oops! I will have to catch up this weekend. I also missed out on the "Scott Baio is 46 & Pregnant" premiere. What will Chachi be like as a dad? I am breathless with anticipation.
I’d like to blame the writers strike. The lack of original programming, I could say, drives me to watch trashy TV instead. But that would be a lie, and I am not a good liar.
The truth is, I sort of love trashy reality TV, probably in part, because I would never subject myself to some of the challenges or open myself up that way, and partly because I wonder how I would do if I were asked to milk a llama or teach village children English under duress.
I even caught "Celebrity Apprentice" last night. Gene Simmons, what were you thinking?? Donald Trump practically begged you to bring Nelly Galan to the board room.
Not that I was sorry to see Gene go. I found him unctuous. Yeah, that’s kind of the perfect word. On the other hand, the unctuous ones are also the most entertaining.
You might start hearing from a few more staffers’ voices here on the Pop Diner. It turns out, even in the newsroom, I am far from alone in my love of trash TV.
But don’t make this a one-way street. What are you guys watching? Who are your early picks for "Idol," and who do you think will be the first team to arrive at Phil’s checkpoint for "The Amazing Race"?
Come on, people. Don’t be shy!
I know I wasn’t the only one who tuned in for this:
