East vs. West

I am enough of a geek that I am checking in to blog while I am on vacation in California wine country, but since The Telegraph has school closing alerts on its Breaking News Blog, I just had to rub it in that it's been between 60 and 70 degrees since I got here.

I came out here knowing nothing about wine. In fact, I typically buy wine based on how clever or pretty I think the label is. After a Wine Tasting 101 class at Copia, which included some fun references to Sideways,

we headed out to the wineries of the Silverado Trail. I am not sure how much I am really retaining, but I am really enjoying the weather and the scenery, as well as a chance to catch up with some college buds.

My two favorite stops so far have been Luna, which has a lovely tower you can go up and see a beautiful view of the vineyard:

My other favorite stop has been Praeger Winery and Port Works, which specializes in port. If you ever get out to Napa, stop here. The owners are wonderful, the place is completely lacking pretension and the port is outstanding. Even I, a total newbie, can tell. Plus, you get a souvenir glass with tasting, and visitors leave dollar bills with little love notes stuck to the wall. It is a funky, awesome place.

Now that I am not so green, I am definitely going to check out New Hampshire's wineries this year. There are only two in the Granite State - Jewell Towne in South Hampton and Flag Hill in Lee.

Although New Hampshire might not be brimming with wineries, I do know there are lots o' wine shops around, and now I won't be as intimidated to stop in for a more local tasting. Anyone have any good local shops to recommend?
