Because your real friends aren’t good enough

Filed under Uncategorized by teresa santoski at 10:22 am

Turns out Mom was wrong - money *can* buy you friends. Well, at least fake ones with ridiculously attractive user pics who will leave flattering comments on your myspace.

The magic of the Internet is truly mindboggling. First, it let us make friends with people in other parts of the world that we might otherwise never have been able to meet, and now, it lets us make friends who don't really exist because the friends it enabled us to make before just aren't cool enough. Gee, thanks, Fake Your Space.

It could make for an interesting kitsch factor ("Hey everybody, check out my new fake friend!"), but overall, it may just add to the epidemic of Internet isolation. You no longer have to interact with people and risk rejection and hurt feelings - you can just bond with a glorified troll who will tell you exactly what you want to hear.

What are your thoughts? Is this fun, sad, possibly dangerous, or a potential plotline for the SciFi Channel's next original series?
