I want to be a part of it, New Yor, New Yorrrrrr

Or, so sang the 47-year-old contestant on last night's American Idol auditions in the Big Apple.

New Yor? New Yor?

Not surprisingly, he didn't make it to the next round. Nor did a spunky girl in a red cowboy hat who broke down in tears while explaining to the panel - sans Simon - that she could be the first American Idol who can't sing.

Come again?

I was excited to see the return of Nicholas Pedro, who dropped out of a previous season after forgetting the words. Like Paula,  I dig Pedro's voice, but the features cluster this morning was aflutter with doubt. Will his memory fail him again?

For me, the biggest heart-tugger of the night was Nakia, a bouncy young woman who really bopped with energy during "Dancin' in the Streets," but was most definitely pitchy, even to my tin ear, when asked for a slower number. What I don't get, though, is why she didn't at least get to Hollywood. I think they have given people with far less talent the coveted yellow pass, and if it really was just nerves, she'd have a chance to rise above or crash and burn.

I am also looking forward to hearing more from Jory, the Canadian who has shmoozed with the queen. But if a Canadian wins, will they have to change the name of the show to North American Idol?

So, who else was watching? Did you see any sparks of talent last night??
