Let’s go, Scots!

I graduated from the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio, in 1996.

Man, that seems like a long time ago.

Most folks around here think I mean Worcester Polytechnic Institute when I talk about my alma mater. Pronounced the same way, but worlds apart. We used to have T-shirts on campus that read, "Wooster is not in Massachusetts — thank God!"

You don’t hear much about Woo in the news, although I’ve always thought that was a shame. It’s a great school, and I had a wonderful four years there.

Then I caught a clip of Matthew McConaughey in an interview about his latest project, We are Marshall.

Turns out McConaughey is playing the legendary Jack Lengyel, the coach who united the Marshall University football team after a 1970 plane crash killed 37 players, eight coaches, 25 boosters and five crew members.

I sorta remember hearing the story before, but what surprised me was hearing McConaughey mention that Lengyel was sitting in Wooster, Ohio, when he first saw news of the crash.

The lanky blond actor pronounced it like "rooster" with a "w," when all who go there know the double oo’s are pronounced like "book." We used to joke it was "Wooster where the cows go, ‘Muh.’ "

So my wonderful little alma mater is on the national radar. Hooray! The movie opens nationwide Dec. 22. Lengyel took my Wooster Fighting Scots from a 1-8 record to an 8-1 record in his time there. Not too shabby, eh?

I am definitely going to catch We are Marshall now. I’ve always been proud of where I went to school, but knowing it once had the good sense to employ such an awesome coach is even more reason to be proud.
