How uncool can uncool get?

Wal-Mart introduces its own social networking site.

It appears the discount giant wants to compete with MySpace.

No, really.

Somehow, I don’t think the MySpace folks need to worry.

They're not trying to compete with MySpace -- they're trying to compete with Target. If you're a teen and you don't have the cash to shop at Abercrombie, you'd go to Target over Walmart without a second thought.

The chance to win some big prizes may entice some, but I don't see teens being actively engaged in the community if they're so heavily policed in being themselves.

The community is not going to blossom if there are too many restrictions. (Sorry. I was being sarcastic about competing with MySpace. The whole thing reminds me of the plot of a Woody Allen film. The one where the couple opens a cookie store as a front while they try to tunnel into the bank next door and then the cookie business takes off beyond their wildest imagination. I kind of do wonder though if somewhere in the back of their minds, the bigwigs at Wal-Mart think that by jumping on the social networking phenomenon, they will salvage their teen apparel sales AND become the next big thing in online Web sites.)
