Why have a ‘Day in the Life’ when you can ‘Live Forever’?

Just saw this caption on an AP photo:

Members of British rock band Oasis pose for photos ahead of a concert in Hong Kong on February 25, 2006. From left are, Gem Archer, Noel Gallagher, Andy Bell, and Liam Gallagher. "Definitely Maybe," the group’s debut album, has beaten the Beatles’ "Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band" in a British vote for the greatest album of all time, organizers said Thursday, June 1, 2006.The Beatles also took third place with "Revolver" and had three other albums in the Top 100 in the vote staged by British Hit Singles & Albums, an annual publication, and NME.com.

OK, Oasis is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me, but are you freaking kidding?! What’s No. 4 on the list? "Spice Up Your Life Pt. 2"?

P.S. While this is the second straight post that deals with the Beatles, it isn’t a pattern, really.

Obviously the poll results were self-selecting and so left out many listeners with sound musical and historical judgment... Seriously, though, this reminds me a bit of the blog post a while back that cited a survey in which the former Nirvana singer was the top rock hero of all time or somthing... clearly these polls reflect overly heavily a specific demographics' "here and now" or worse, the "now" of that demographics' formative years, and not a broader historical sense... It's sort of like asking a 12-year-old kid who's only been exposed to Friendly's and McDonalds what the greatest culinary invention of all time is. Would we be surprised if he said, "hamburgers"?
