‘Code’ overload

Filed under General by marty karlon at 8:13 am

I’m not a huge fiction reader. Political and military history books, magazines and books about baseball stats are the things spilling out of my nightstand. However, I recently read ‘The DaVinci Code" to see what the hoopla was about.

I wasn’t impressed.

Again, I’m not a fiction snob who disdains best-sellers, but if I’m going to put down "After the Victorians" for a couple weeks, I’d like a bigger payoff. Sure, the story reads quickly and there’s a lot of conspiracy stuff and puzzles, but you really can’t solve any of them yourself, so you are left waiting for Robert Langdon to have yet another "eureka moment" while staring out the window. And the anti-Catholic business? The book is fiction, folks. You know, made up. Anyone who would question the teaching of the church after the reading this book has bigger problems than a bible class can solve. I guess I just expected more. (Although the movie should be pretty entertaining - but what’s up with Tom Hanks’ hair?)

Last summer I read Dan Brown’s previous novel, "Angels and Demons" and liked it much better. But if you want to check out some really engrossing fiction, I’d recommend the other two other novels I’ve read in the past year: "A Slight Trick of the Mind" by Mitch Cullin and "The Shadow of the Wind" by Carlos Ruiz Zafón. The characters and places just jump off the pages in these books, which aren’t mysteries so much as hauntingly mysterious.
