Sheesh, I’ll Never Do That Again

Filed under General by nick pappas at 4:38 pm

Boy, if I ever needed more incentive not to go so long without posting new material to my blog, I just got it:

Not only did my most recent item get dropped from our main blog page, but any reference to The Editor’s Blog at the top of the left-hand rail under TELEGRAPH BLOGS disappeared entirely. At least that was the case when I checked in earlier this afternoon.

By way of some explanation/excuse, reporter Al McKeon and I were out of state for a few days last week attending a symposium at the American Press Institute in Reston, Va., on a national project called the Learning Newsroom.

Some of you might recall that under the direction of my predecessor, Dave Solomon, The Telegraph was one of the first three newspapers in the country — and ultimately the smallest — to be chosen to participate in the program, which is a joint venture by API and the American Society of Newspaper Editors and is funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

In a nutshell, the goal of the program is to challenge the traditional top-down structure of newsrooms and to create a culture in which ideas and innovation sprout from every corner. Training initiatives also play a major role in a learning newsroom environment.

During the symposium, representatives of eight of the 10 newspapers selected for the project came together to speak both formally and informally about their experiences to date.

(For the curious, the other newspapers are: The Sarasota Herald-Tribune of Sarasota, Fla; The San Jose Mercury News of San Jose, Calif.; The Bakersfield Californian of Bakersfield, Calif;; The Citizen-Times of Asheville, N.C..; The Corpus Christi Caller-Times of Corpus Christi, Texas; The Hamilton Spectator of Hamilton, Ontario; The Herald-Times of Bloomington, Ind.; The Journal Star of Lincoln, Neb., and The News Tribune of Tacoma, Wash.)

We also received additional instruction/advice from the program leaders, and we all returned to our respective newsrooms inspired with some new ideas to roll out for consideration.

That’s the (relatively) short answer for where I’ve been of late, and I’ve got a few ideas for some new postings later in the week.

Given that, can I have my Editor’s Blog listing back on our blog page?

Please?
