Move over, MoMA - here comes the MoBA

Teresa | 24 July, 2008 08:30 | (149)

Did you know that New England is home to the Museum of Bad Art? Nestled just outside the men's room in the basement of the Dedham (Mass.) Community Theatre, this gallery space is the only museum in the world dedicated to the preservation of truly awful art.

Not "whimsically eccentric art." Not "art-that's-so-bad-it's-good." Really, sincerely, terribly, horribly bad art. I've only seen those pieces of the collection that are available in their online gallery, but seriously. The mind boggles.

From the unfortunate portrait of someone's grandma that started it all to what appears to be a cow committing suicide, the MoBA is definitely a visual feast for bad art aficionados.

Concerned that your bad art appreciation skills aren't up to snuff? Head out to the Needham (Mass.) Public Library on Highland Avenue at 7 p.m. on July 28th for a lecture by Louise Reilly Sacco, permanent acting interim executive director of the Museum of Bad Art.

Sacco will discuss how to identify and locate bad art and give tips on bad art interpretation. Feel free to bring the bad art you've hidden away in your attic or basement - Sacco will tell you whether it's a museum quality monsterpiece or just simply bad. You'll also have an opportunity to purchase copies of the MoBA's first publication, "The Museum of Bad Art: Masterworks."

For more information, call the Needham Public Library at 781-455-7559.

Snowy Sunday

JenO | 16 December, 2007 08:21 | (160)

If you haven't noticed, it's a bit snowy outside today. As a result, the Nashua Flute Choir is rescheduling its "Silver Flutes for Christmas" concert, which was scheduled for 3 p.m. today at the First Church in Nashua. The concert will take place at the same location and same time next Sunday.

Any other rescheduled events we should know about?

I want more for my $9 movie ticket!

Really, there's just not enough movie options for me in the area.

Ever feel like Dwight Schrute III?

Albert | 18 September, 2007 09:47 | (270)

Apparently, Michael Scott could be tranferred to Nashua someday. The Gate City is one of six cities listed as having Dunder Mifflin branches. This tidbit is on the fictional company's website, an offshoot of The Office main page.

This led me to wonder if any local offices mirror The Office. Does your coworker act like Dwight? Play pranks like Jim? Cringe at fun as Angela does?

If so, give me a shout. I'm writing a story and could make you as famous as Jenna Fischer.

By the way, I'm Albert McKeon. And you can reach me at 594-5832 or amckeon@nashuatelegraph.com

Smokin' craic

JenO | 14 September, 2007 21:51 | (262)

I just got home from my first adult Irish dance class over at Dancing Corner on Main Street in Nashua with the McGonagle School of Irish dance.

My feet are a bit sore and my calves a bit tight, but I cannot stop smiling. It was sooo much fun.

Hey there, Pheasant Lane Mall

JenO | 28 June, 2007 13:17 | (168)

Did you ever start listening to a band a year or two before everyone else and then feel a mix of happiness for them and annoyance at the folks who are jumping on the bandwagon when they finally have a hit song?

That's sorta how I feel about the Plain White T's.  I've been following them for quite some time now, and am thrilled that "Hey There, Delilah" has hit the public consciousness, is getting some serious airtime on radio stations and is rising up the chart, even though it's not a new song at all.

Vicarious ikebana for the feline-encumbered

Teresa | 05 June, 2007 11:08 | (184)

This weekend, I had the opportunity to check out the student exhibition at Ikebana Flower on West Pearl Street in Nashua. I spent more time examining the dozen or so floral arrangements than I did the whole of the Shanghai Museum in China. This may have been partly due to the massive gift shop at the Shanghai Museum, but they were still entrancing.

Screaming "Whee!" and giggling with glee probably isn't very metal of me

Teresa | 23 May, 2007 09:49 | (183)

One of my favorite German power metal bands is finally playing New Hampshire! Edguy will be performing Sept. 14th at 6 p.m. at Mark's Place in Bedford, along with Canadian metalheads Into Eternity. Whee! Sorry.

Civil rights in an uncivil time

JenO | 04 May, 2007 15:30 | (137)

This weekend, Nashua's own Yellow Taxi Productions opened "Six Nights in the Black Belt," an original play by Gate City resident Lowell Williams that tells the story of New Hampshire civil rights martyr Jonathan Daniels.

Battle wings sold separately

Teresa | 27 March, 2007 10:43 | (170)

This past weekend, for the first time ever, I was able to check out an event I wrote up for The Week in Preview that was not happening in my town. My family and I drove out to Peterborough for Polish Heritage Day at the Mariposa Museum and Cultural Center. The verdict: Why didn't I check this place out sooner?

If someone drops a house on my sister (and brother), does that make me the Wicked Witch of the West?

Teresa | 18 December, 2006 09:56 | (439)

I attended the Christmas pageant at the Brookline Community Church last night and I must say, I was quite pleased with the performance. For one thing, there weren't any casualties this year.
