In the rush of the primary, a crush for space

Filed under Uncategorized by teresa santoski at 12:00 pm

Those of you who are avid readers of The Week in Preview may have noticed that this week’s column was a bit shorter than usual. (I wish I could make some sort of crack here about my mom being the only one who reads it, but even she doesn’t read it every week). Due to the need to include information on local polling places, an item was cut.

This item, sadly, was a very special poem by TWiP’s poet laureate, Stephen Scaer, written especially for the grand occasion that is the New Hampshire Primary. Even though it didn’t make it into the paper, I wanted to share it online, because some poetry is just too good to go unread.

The poem is in bold. All other text was written by me as a part of the rest of the item. So, originally, it should’ve gone like so:

It feels like ages since you’ve been able to set foot in a local diner without tripping over a presidential hopeful. Today, all of that will change. Yup, the New Hampshire primary has finally arrived.

For those of you who appreciate our state’s glorious first-in-the-nation tradition but would really like to get a cup of coffee without battling those scary-looking guys in black suits, TWiP’s poet laureate, Stephen Scaer, of Nashua, has a very special poem just for you.

Primary Primer

It’s time at last to end the wait
and rank the cornucopia
of candidates who cloud the state
with visions of Utopia.

They’ve promised job security,
world peace and universal health.
They’ll safeguard your prosperity
by spreading other people’s wealth.

Some welcome strangers through the border
with open arms – of course, that is,
if all their papers are in order –
while others issue licenses.

A few of them would stay the course
in Baghdad; Others want a date
by which we would withdraw our force,
and still a few equivocate.

You’ve shaken hands and heard their shtick,
so do your part before they go:
Choose your poison. Take your pick:
Eeny, meeny, miny, moe . . .

Speak your mind by casting your vote, not only in today’s primary but in the Nov. 4th presidential election as well. And make sure you get a good night’s rest on Nov. 4th, because on Nov. 5th, the primary campaigning season for the 2012 election kicks off, and you’re going to have to get up pretty early to get a seat at the diner.

Here ends the item. I didn’t want you guys to miss out on the supreme niftiness of the TWiP poet laureate.
