Smokin’ craic

I just got home from my first adult Irish dance class over at Dancing Corner on Main Street in Nashua with the McGonagle School of Irish dance.

My feet are a bit sore and my calves a bit tight, but I cannot stop smiling. It was sooo much fun.

Bear in mind, I am the least rhythmically inclined of the O'Callaghan clan, a fact I often trace back to a moment in my history that has come to be known as the Elegant Elephant incident. When I was a kid, I took tap and ballet classes and really dug it until my first recital. My class danced to "Elegant Elephant." I had to wear pink and blue satin elephant ears while kids in other classes were far cooler Red, Red Robins or trolley girls or even sunflowers. Let's just say you shouldn't force a kid to be an Elegant Elephant when in her heart she is a Red, Red Robin.

But I digress.

It was only women in class tonight, so some had to be the "gents." I was lucky enough to be paired with a more experienced dancer, so she volunteered to be the gent. Which made me the lady. Hee. First time anyone's ever called me that. Hee. Although I am sure her toes are sore from where I stepped on them, she was very supportive - as was everyone of each other's efforts.

And let me tell you, you can't be sad during ceili dancing. I defy you to frown when the music starts. It is such a happy, joyous feeling.

I have to miss next week's lesson since I will be guest-starring on the copy desk for the Saturday paper, but I can't wait to go back. You can't beat the feeling. I left, sweaty, a bit sore and uber thirsty (I didn't think to bring water), but already eager to come back.
