When Oops Isn't Good Enough

As I mentioned to a disappointed e-mailer Tuesday afternoon, there is perhaps nothing more frustrating in this business than trying to do something nice for readers only to find out that we ended up disappointing them.

That's how I felt Tuesday morning upon learning that our special graduation section inadvertently omitted the 40 Nashua High School North graduates who were unfortunate enough to be born with last names that start with letters near the end of the alphabet. Or in this case, everyone after Jessica P. Snow.

Future of News

Tom Rosenstiel, director of the Project for Excellence in Journalism and vice chairman of the Committee of Concerned Journalists, gave a thought-provoking speech the other day on the future of journalism.

Rosenstiel's speech -- "The Future of News: Sense-Making and Other Thoughts for Survival" -- was delivered May 22 at a Future of News conference at the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Early Feedback On Earl Stories

I just wanted to take a moment to acknowledge those readers who took time out of their busy day to thank us for our package of stories today on the travel practices of Nashua Superintendent of Schools Julia Earl.

As you can imagine, it's much more common for readers to call or e-mail a newspaper to complain about something than to praise it for a job well done. That's human nature and certainly something that newspaper editors learn very quickly upon entering this wonderful profession.

Andrew's Farewell To Nashua

"Andrew, it's been an absolute pleasure."

Those were among my parting words Friday to staff reporter Andrew Nelson, who is leaving The Telegraph after more than eight years of gracing our pages -- first as our night police reporter and more recently as our eyes and ears inside City Hall.
