Too Cruel To Be True

Nick | 31 May, 2006 20:14 | (494)

I didn't really intend to use my blog for this purpose, but every once in a while you come upon a story that just makes you want to cry -- and then go hug your children.

Here is the lead as written by Associated Press reporter James Prichard:

CALEDONIA, Mich. -- A couple sat by their daughter's hospital bedside for weeks after an auto accident until she came out of a coma and they realized she was not their daughter after all, but another blond-haired young woman injured in the wreck. Their own daughter, it turned out, was dead and buried.

Here's the rest of the story ...

The Week in Preview

Nick | 30 May, 2006 21:04 | (497)

So what did you think?

That's what I would like to know about "The Week in Preview," which made its debut Monday on the front of the Nashua & Region section.

The purpose of the new feature, which was teased at the top of Page 1, is to give readers a sense of -- to quote the subtitle -- "What the region will be talking about this week."

Reader Advocate Bids Farewell

Nick | 26 May, 2006 11:28 | (434)

Please take a few minutes on Sunday to read the farewell column by John Sias, our reader advocate, which will appear in print on the front of the Perspectives section and online under "Opinions."

John served as The Telegraph's reader advocate for the past three years and is stepping down from that post so he can devote more time to a new challenge: serving as president of the New Hampshire Prostate Cancer Coalition.

Our Commitment to Watchdog Journalism

Nick | 24 May, 2006 14:25 | (577)

OK, let's have a quick showing of hands. How many of you noticed anything different about last Wednesday's Telegraph?

Actually, that's probably not a fair question, given that Wednesday represented the third of pretty much four consecutive days of extensive flood coverage.

The reason I ask is that weeks before the first drop of rain fell in the area, we decided to do something here that we hadn't done during my nearly two decades at The Telegraph:

Sheesh, I'll Never Do That Again

Nick | 22 May, 2006 16:38 | (1019)

Boy, if I ever needed more incentive not to go so long without posting new material to my blog, I just got it:

Not only did my most recent item get dropped from our main blog page, but any reference to The Editor's Blog at the top of the left-hand rail under TELEGRAPH BLOGS disappeared entirely. At least that was the case when I checked in earlier this afternoon.

Nick | 11 May, 2006 21:26 | (1934)

One of our long-standing policies here at The Telegraph is that we will publish a clarification or correction to a story whenever we feel it is necessary -- whether a reader brings something to our attention or not.

How We Broke the Julia Earl Story

Nick | 10 May, 2006 21:18 | (1692)

While Telegraph reporters and editors are scrambling to complete our coverage of Julia Earl’s Wednesday trip to Tulsa, Okla., to interview for the superintendent of schools job, I thought it might be of some interest to explain how we got to this point.

That is, how did we initially learn that the Nashua superintendent was one of four finalists for the Tulsa job, a story that we broke on the front page of Monday’s Telegraph.

Did we get a tip from someone in Tulsa?

Did we get a tip from someone closer to home in Nashua.

Did we have a reporter stationed some 1,600 miles away in Tulsa?

The answer?
