Sneak Preview of New Comic Strip Winner

Filed under Uncategorized by nick pappas at 7:15 pm

This certainly won't rank among the biggest leaks in the history of journalism, but then again we are talking about something near and dear to many of our readers' hearts: comic strips.

Six weeks ago, as some of you may recall, we asked for your assistance in helping to select a new comic strip to replace "B.C." after the death of its creator, Johnny Hart.

During that period, we introduced you to three new strips by publishing them in two-week cycles on our comics pages: "Retail," "Rhymes with Orange" and "Pickles.

In Monday's Telegraph, Sunday/Features Editor Marty Karlon will announce the winning strip, based largely on the response of those readers who took the time to contact us.

But for those of you who can't wait, you can read it here first:

"For the past six weeks, we've been running samples of three comic strips we were considering as replacements for "B.C."

"About 50 readers contacted us with their preferences (and their dislikes) and the most popular strip, by far, was "Pickles." In case you missed it, "Pickles" is a family humor strip about a retired couple in their seventies who find their "golden years" less than idyllic — in a funny way.

"Also starting today, we're replacing "Wizard of Id" with "Lio," an offbeat strip that tells stories only with images. The main character is a curious young boy with an imagination that's unleashed by bumps in the night and things hidden under the bed.

"In case you were wondering, we decided to replace "B.C." and "Wizard of Id" after the recent death of Johnny Hart. Hart did "B.C." and collaborated with artist Jeff Parker on "Wizard of Id." While Hart's estate planned to continue the strips, we felt they would miss the creative spark that made them so popular and original. We also wanted to open the comics pages up to new voices.

"We're proud to offer more daily comics strips than any other New Hampshire newspaper and while every change can't satisfy everyone, we hope these changes give many of you something new to look forward to each day."

– MARTY KARLON, Sunday and features editor

So there you have it. And, please, there's no need to thank me.

Though, knowing how passionate readers are about their comic strips, something tells me "thanks" might not be on everyone's mind right now.

So let's get those comment postings started …
