When Oops Isn't Good EnoughNick | 20 June, 2006 21:54 | (530)
As I mentioned to a disappointed e-mailer Tuesday afternoon, there is perhaps nothing more frustrating in this business than trying to do something nice for readers only to find out that we ended up disappointing them. That's how I felt Tuesday morning upon learning that our special graduation section inadvertently omitted the 40 Nashua High School North graduates who were unfortunate enough to be born with last names that start with letters near the end of the alphabet. Or in this case, everyone after Jessica P. Snow. Since we can't reprint the entire section with those missing names, anything we decide to do to correct the error will pale in comparison to having done it correctly in the first place. This is particularly true in a section such as this, which many grandparents, parents and students might want to hang onto as a keepsake of the big day. My first instinct was to print the names of the missing students in Wednesday's Telegraph, but it quickly became evident to me that wouldn't be good enough. After some discussions with other editors in the newsroom, we decided to publish the entire list of North graduates in Wednesday's paper, so at least they will all be together on one page. A "To Our Readers" box on the front page will alert readers where to look for the list of graduates. Of course, it's not quite the same thing, but it was the best we could do under the circumstances. Other than to say we're sorry for not living up to your expectations.
