Can spending more save you more?

Filed under Savvy Shopper by sherman smith

For some time, drugstores have been trying to bribe shoppers to spend by promising post-purchase saving coupons (good for use on the next or a future purchase). Now, supermarkets are getting into the act. We see these offers at Shaw’s and Stop & Shop this week.

But be careful: You’ll need to be organized and save those print-out coupons in a safe place; they are like money. Furthermore, you’ll need to remember to use the coupons quickly, because they usually expire in a month or less. Plus, many of the manufacturer’s rebates require store receipt, rebate form and UPCs. That’s a lot of ways you can mess up the process and miss out on extra savings. Still, the offers can be tempting.

For example, from today-Thursday (July 31-Aug. 6), Shaw’s is offering $5 off your next purchase when you buy $20 in P&G products as well as an extra $15 off your next shopping trip when you spend $30 or more on participating General Mills and Unilever products. There’s also a form for a $10 rebate for buying various Kellogg’s products.

Also, from today-Thursday (July 31-Aug. 6), Stop & Shop/Milford also has some savings for shoppers who buy multiple products, including four boxes of General Mills cereal for $6 and four 12-packs of Pepsi products for $10. Furthermore, Stop & Shop fliers have strips of four $1 doubler coupons to use when you spend at least $15. Additionally, shoppers can save on Edy’s ice cream 1.5-quart containers priced at $1.99 (limit 3) and sweet corn, 12 ears for $1.99.

From Sunday-Saturday (Aug. 2-8), Market Basket has a number of good specials. Gallons of store brand milk (whole, 2%, 1% and skim) are $1.99. Cooked deli ham is $2.99 a pound. There are in-store coupons to use on Kellogg’s cereal (as well as the $10 rebate from Kellogg’s). Plus, there’s a Barilla penne value pack of eight 1-pound boxes for $6.99, and heads of romaine lettuce for 79 cents.

Finally, the CVS and Walgreen drugstore chains have some good deals this week.

From Sunday-Tuesday (Aug. 2-4), CVS has four 12-packs of Pepsi products for $8 after $4 back in Extra Bucks. Also on those three days, there are many good offers on back-to-school products, including some for free.

From Sunday-Saturday (Aug. 2-8), Walgreens has various Kellogg’s cereals at two boxes for $3, after $2 back in Register Rewards. And there’s a flier coupon for store brand 500-count aspirin or 100- to 125-count enteric aspirin for $1.99 (limit 3).

Always try to use manufacturers coupons to save even more.

Where are the good deals on fruits and veggies?

Filed under Savvy Shopper by sherman smith

We’ve got more of those back-to-school specials at the drugstores next week, and some steep discounts on a few items at the supermarkets. But where are the many good prices on the fruits and veggies? Maybe we should start making shot-in-the-dark trips to local farmers markets.

From today-Thursday (July 24-30), Stop & Shop/Milford has northwest [...]

Free to complain about ‘buy one, get one’ deals

Filed under Savvy Shopper by sherman smith

I like free as much as the next savvy shopper, but I’m tired of seeing so much made of “buy one, get one free” specials. What you’re really getting then are two at half the regular price, which may or may not be much of a bargain, and the items may be one more than [...]

The next week’s supermarket fliers that come with your Telegraph can help in planning money-saving shopping trips – unless the bargain prices at the market where you shop don’t match the deals in the flier.

That can happen if you live in one community and shop at a Shaw’s, Hannaford or Stop & Shop in [...]

There’s good news this week for the workaholics who always seem to complain they have no life. A couple of supermarkets have Life cereal on sale and there are other good bargains to be had, too.

Post-holiday bargains still there to grab

There were some special two- or four-day sales at stores and markets during the Memorial Day weekend, but like most weekends, they came to an end too soon. Don’t worry, bargain-hunters, there are still some good deals to be had as we play out the end of the fliers’ week.
