Supermarket, store bargains begin at home

The next week’s supermarket fliers that come with your Telegraph can help in planning money-saving shopping trips – unless the bargain prices at the market where you shop don’t match the deals in the flier.

That can happen if you live in one community and shop at a Shaw’s, Hannaford or Stop & Shop in another community. The deals you see listed in a Market Basket circular, however, are the deals you’ll get in a Market Basket. It can be confusing seeing different prices for different items among three chains’ circulars, so I’ll list the cut-and-dried deals at Market Basket first.

Through Saturday at Market Basket, you can get haddock fillets for $4.99 a pound, ripe pineapples for $2, store brand roast beef for $3.99 a pound, Polar seltzer 12-packs for $2.50 and Turkey Hill iced tea half-gallons for 99 cents. Hood cottage cheese in 1-pound containers is $1.67, Dannon Activia yogurt 4-packs is $2, Prince pasta in 1-pound boxes is 79 cents, store brand whole bean house blend coffee in 39-ounce bags is $5.99, store brand peanut butter in a 28-ounce jar is $2.50, southern peaches in a value pack are 79 cents a pound, broccoli crowns are $1.29 a pound, and 30-packs of Miller, Busch and Natural Light in cans are $12.99.

Through Thursday at Stop & Shop, you can get value packs of boneless chicken breast for $1.69 a pound in Milford (and $1.79 in Hudson). Tropicana half-gallons are $1.99 (limit four) in Milford (and $2.50 in Hudson). But 18-packs of Budweiser, Bud Light or Bud Select cans are $9.99 in Hudson (and $10.99 in Milford).

Through Thursday at Shaw’s, you can get a store brand Culinary Circle Pizza along with a free Sunkist 2-liter with coupon for $3.99 in Milford (and for $4.88 in Nashua and Londonderry). Tide 100-ounce liquid detergent is $9.99 in Milford (and $10.99 in Nashua and Londonderry). Pints of fresh blueberries are $1.67 in Milford (and as a buy one, get one special in Nashua and Londonderry). Don’t forget to check for extra coupons to print at Shaws.com.

Through Saturday at Hannaford, there are bargains, too, and here’s some good news for area shoppers: The prices are usually lower at the Hudson, Londonderry and Nashua markets than at Bedford and Manchester markets. Turkey Hill teas and drinks in half-gallons are 99 cents at all markets; broccoli crowns are 99 cents a pound (versus $1.49); store brand frozen fries in various sizes are $1.49 (versus $1.99); Dannon 6-ounce yogurts are 40 cents (versus 50 cents), and boneless sirloin tips are $4.49 (versus $4.99).

There are also some savings at drug stores. CVS has a buy one, get one on Flex-a-min or Nature’s Bounty supplements. Four SoyJoy nutrition bars are free after $4 in Extra Bucks, and Folgers classic roast coffee in the 33.9-ounce container is $5.99 (limit three).

Walgreens has Aquafresh Advanced toothpaste in 5.6- or 6-ounce tubes free after $3 in Register Rewards. Select General Mills cereals in various sizes are three for $6 after $1 in Register Rewards, and store brand 100-count aspirin are two for $1 (limit four) after a flier coupon.

Always try to use manufacturers coupons to save even more.
