Specials just in time for the holiday

There’s a holiday weekend coming, and with it reasons to remember and celebrate, but we can’t take time off from looking for good deals.
Market Basket has several items to add to our must-buy lists, including previously frozen haddock fillets for $3.99 a pound, beef sirloin tips for $4.99 a pound, cooked ham at the deli for $1.99 a pound, Turkey Hill iced tea in real half-gallons and ice cream (in the incredible shrinking containers, now at 48 ounces), fresh green beans for 79 cents a pound, Freihofer’s Country Breads at $2 for 24-ounce loaves, and 30-packs of Budweiser, Miller or Coors beers in cans for $16.99.
Hannaford has bicolor sweet corn for 19 cents an ear, boneless N.Y. sirloin steaks at $2.49 a pound and the same $16.99 special on 30-packs of Budweiser, Miller or Coors beers in cans.
Stop & Shop has boneless breast of chicken in 3-pound or larger packages for $1.79 a pound, varieties of General Mills or Kellogg’s cereals for $2 a box and Pepsi 12-packs at five for $11, which is just $2.20 each, but you must buy five. There’s also a chance for those with the Stop & Shop card to save $5 instantly if they spend $20 on Unilever products, including Dove soap, Breyer’s ice cream, as well as Skippy, Ragu, Hellman’s and more.
Shaw’s is now localizing its specials even more, offering savings but sometimes different prices on items at its Milford and Merrimack markets, and possibly Nashua markets. Calling it “Price Watch” and claiming to be lowering everyday prices “up to 20%,” the supermarket chain, has Anjou pears for 99 cents a pound in Merrimack and $1.19 a pound in Milford. But Dragone ricotta cheese in 32-ounce containers is advertised at $3.19 in Milford and $3.59 in Merrimack.
The CVS and Walgreens drugstore chains have pre-Memorial Day specials, too. Some of CVS’ listed items are buy 1, get 1 free, which can sometimes offer savings, but sometimes not. CVS does have its 500-caplet (or 500-tablet) bottles of acetaminophen or ibuprofen for $5.99, while Walgreens has a similar deal, offering a flier coupon for savings of $5 off its 500-count bottles of ibuprofen.
Walgreens does have two freebies on the back cover of its flier: new 4-ounce Colgate Visible White Toothpaste with $4.49 in Register Rewards and new Bayer aspirin Quick Release Crystals 4-packs with $2.49 back in Register Rewards. CVS also has $1 back in Extra Bucks on Dial bar soap three-packs. And Walgreens offers $1 back in Register Rewards on Bic Bonus Packs of lighters and on Skintimate and Edge shave gel.
Always look to use manufacturer’s coupons to save even more.
