Scores of things for supermarket shoppers to weigh

How does your supermarket rate? Based on a Consumer Reports survey, the magazine has come up with ratings of 59 supermarkets nationwide, and nine from the area made the list that appears in the May issue. The markets, including superstores, got reader scores between 87 and 64 and are graded on service, perishables, price and cleanliness.

Here are the nine area markets that made the list, their place in the ratings and their scores: Trader Joe’s, second, 86; Costco, seventh, 81; Market Basket, ninth, 81; Hannaford, 21st, 77; Sam’s Club, 38th, 74; BJ’s Wholesale Club, 42nd, 74; Stop & Shop, 48th, 71; Wal-Mart Supercenter, 56th, 69; and Shaw’s, 57th, 69.

Now, let’s look at specials this week from the four supermarkets that send their fliers home via The Telegraph.

Market Basket has center cut pork chops (bone in) for $1.69 a pound. Its brand of deli roast beef for $3.99 a pound. Coho salmon fillets are $5.99 a pound. Healthy Choice entrees are $1.67. Carando salamis, including Genoa and pepperoni, are $2.99 a pound at the deli. Store brand gallons of milk, including 1 percent and 2 percent, are $2.29. Forty-ounce bottles of Lysol all-purpose cleaner are $2.50. Half-gallons of Juicy Juice 100 percent juice are $2.50.

Hannaford has split chicken breast in 4- to 6-pound packages as well as boneless pork sirloin steak for 99 cents a pound. Its store brand yogurt in 6- to 8-ounce containers are 35 cents.

Stop & Shop has 80 percent lean ground beef for $1.99 a pound, and semi-boneless rib steak is $5.99 a pound.

Talk about picking your supermarket to save, Shaw’s in Milford and Merrimack has lower prices on four of the items in its fliers than at its other supermarkets in New Hampshire, including Nashua and Londonderry. Bottom round roasts or boneless sirloin cutlets are $1.79 a pound in Milford and Merrimack; $1.99 a pound elsewhere. Bumble Bee solid white albacore tuna in 5- to 6-ounce cans are 88 cents in Milford and Merrimack; $1 elsewhere. Six-inch Easter lilies, daffodils, tulips or hyacinths are $5 in Milford and Merrimack; $6.99 elsewhere. And Sargento shredded cheeses in 5- to 8-ounce packages are $1.67 in Milford and Merrimack; $2 elsewhere. Asparagus at all the supermarkets is a deal at $1.49 a pound.

There are deals also at the drugstore chains. CVS has Softsoap scrub body wash in the 18-ounce container free after $4.99 in ExtraBucks. Pantene shampoo and condition in 12.6- to 13.5-ounce containers are two for $5 after $2 in ExtraBucks. Two Colgate toothpastes and a sensitive toothbrush are free after $3.99 in ExtraBucks. Softsoap 40-ounce refills or Irish Spring bar soap 8-packs are $2.99 after $2 in ExtraBucks.

Walgreens has select Kellogg’s or Kashi cereals at three for $7 after $3 in Register Rewards. Scunci Elastics 18-packs are free after $2 in Register Rewards. Select Colgate toothbrushes are free after $3.29 in Register Rewards. And check out the offer for a free Virgin Mobile prepay cell phone ($19.99 value) with a purchase of a $50 Virgin Mobile card.

Always look to use manufacturer’s coupons to save even more.
