Brief sales are gone too quickly for many

The calendar matters sometimes in shopping for supermarket specials. With two chains in the area, Stop & Shop and Shaw’s, running their weekly sales Friday-Thursday and two other chains, Market Basket and Hannaford, on Sunday-Saturday weeks, it can pay to scan the circulars quickly after they arrive.

If you’d done that last Thursday, you’d have seen some Three-Day Sale prices that might have been worth jumping at. Sorry, but those sales ended Sunday. It’s a reminder to get a early jump by checking next week’s fliers this Thursday.

Among good prices remaining through Saturday, Market Basket has gallons of its brand of milk for $2.39, 12-ounce bags of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee for $4.99, heads of cauliflower for $1.50, broccoli crowns for $1.29 a pound, 6-ounce containers of Dannon yogurt for 40 cents, 8-ounce bags of Sargento shredded cheese for $2, 25- to 27-ounce Uno pizzas for $3.33 and previously frozen haddock fillets for $4.99 a pound.

Hannaford has roasting chickens for 79 cents a pound. The chain also is touting its Rx Healthy Saver Plus plan, which costs $7 a year for a family and is a value-based program, not insurance. It offers free oral antibiotics plus discounts on generic drugs and other savings.

On the shorter sales week, Stop & Shop has its White Gem boneless chicken breast for $1.79 a pound and Turkey Hill ice cream in 48-ounce containers for $1.99, limit three. The chain is also offering free 14-day supplies of select antibiotics through March 21 at its markets with full-service pharmacies.

Shaw’s has Perdue boneless chicken breast in 3-pound or bigger packages for $1.79 a pound and skinless prefrozen haddock fillets for $4.99 a pound.

CVS was also running a two-day sale through Monday, Feb. 2, on three items, but two are candy and the third is bottled water, all unnecessary in good economic times or bad. Let’s consider other deals that are worth going after. The drug store chain is offering $4 back in Extra Bucks on Gillette Fusion razors, making the price $3.99. Shoppers can get $5 back when they spend $15 on a range of products, including Colgate, Speed Stick, Softsoap, Palmolive, Huggies and Johnson’s baby lotion, oil and other products. An Excedrin 10-count vial is free after $2.49 back in ExtraBucks.

Walgreens drugstores have some items for free after rebate: a Revlon age-defying concealer and a lip gloss, some Garnier Fructis hair care products, Zucol Coldcare 18-packs of lozenges and a ThermaCare single trial size wrap. The chain is selling reusable green bags at three for $1. Walgreens also has Gillette Fusion, Venus and Embrace razors for $2.99 after $6 back in Register Rewards. Finally, Clinical Right Guard or Dry Idea deodorant are 99 cents after $5 back.

Look to use manufacturer’s coupons to save even more.
