Cover yourself for the best savings

As a rule, most of the best deals in the weekly fliers from area supermarkets, drug and retail stores appear on the front or back covers.

We see this in Stop & Shop’s flier, where Edy’s ice cream former half-gallons are $1.99, limit three; White Gem boneless chicken breasts in 3-pound or larger packages are $1.79 a pound; and Dannon yogurt in 6-ounce cups are 40 cents apiece, and you can use a $1 off manufacturer’s coupon.

The Hannaford flier lists whole boneless pork loin, 7- to 9-pound average (but cut and wrapped free) for $1.89 a pound, and Krakus imported ham at $3.99 a pound. Also, the back cover points out that DVDs from the automated rental kiosk are $1 a day, which is the same price they rent for at Stop & Shop.

At Shaw’s’, Yoplait yogurt, in 4- to 6-ounce cups, is priced at 50 cents, but save $2 if you use the flier coupon and buy 20 cups, plus there are manufacturer’s coupons to use. Chef Boyardee canned or microwavable pasta is $1 each, and there are coupons to use. Whole roasting chicken is 79 cents a pound. The back cover also has an ad to save $15 on your next trip if you spend $30 this trip on a pageful of products. That’s too complicated for me.

Market Basket has its 1-pound loaves of white bread for 50 cents; 3-pound bags of McIntosh, Empire or Cortland apples for $2.29; Krakus ham also $3.99 a pound, half-gallons of Juicy Juice 100 percent juice for $2.50, plus use a manufacturer’s coupon; 50-ounce bottles of Purex laundry detergent are $2.50, plus look for a coupon; fresh radishes are 79 cents for a 1-pound bag; and 12- and 24-ounce bags of Fresh Express garden salads are 99 cents or $1.99 for the truly unskilled cooks.

A couple of freebie items after rebates are listed in two fliers: four-packs of Pentel gel pens and Sharpie pens at Staples; and10 Soyjoy bars and Fructis shampoo, conditioner or styler at Rite Aid.

CVS has ExtraBucks savings on Fructis hair products and Cottonelle 20-packs of bathroom tissue, and there’s an offer to get $10 back if you spend $20 on various Johnson & Johnson products.

Finally, Walgreens has a supercoupon to use on multiple purchases of Softsoap, Irish Spring, Palmolive, Tom’s of Maine and Colgate. The drugstore chain also has its wax paper or double zip storage bags, and Reynolds Wrap 20-square-foot rolls for 99 cents (limit two), and Ajax cleanser for 33 cents (limit three), all with store coupons.
