Pre-Thanksgiving deals to harvest

Filed under Savvy Shopper by sherman smith at 4:25 pm

The week of Thanksgiving brings holiday offers in earnest, and I’m told The Telegraph on Thursday will be as stuffed with advertising inserts – 47 – as our turkeys are with stuffing.

Meanwhile, we’ve got nearly a week of offers from area drug store and grocery chains to mull beforehand.

Walgreens has some sweet and essential items to put us in a better holiday shopping mood, even given the glum state of economic news. This week’s flier has Reese’s and Hershey candy in 7.6- to 9.2-ounce bags at four for $5 after $5 mail-in rebate, and there may be manufacturer’s coupons. Shrinking boxes of Haviland mints or Nestle Nips at 79 cents. 3M Scotch packaging tape is buy one at $2.99, get one free, and there are manufacturer’s coupons to use from the Sunday packets. Bottles of Excedrin to ease the headaches, in 20- or 24-count bottles, are buy one at $4.49, get one free, and there are $2 off manufacturer’s coupons to use. There’s also a store coupon for Walgreens aluminum foil in a 20-square-foot roll for 50 cents, limit two.

CVS has a number of Right Guard Professional deodorants at 99 cents after $7 back in ExtraBucks. And multipacks of Energizer batteries, including rechargeables, are on sale for $10; plus, if you spend $20 (and buy two packages), you’ll get $10 back in ExtraBucks. Look to use a couple of $1 off manufacturer’s coupons as well.

Ah yes, food. Shaw’s in Nashua has Jennie-O or Shady Brook Farms frozen turkeys at 48 cents a pound or Jennie-O fresh turkeys at 99 cents a pound, after you spend an additional $25 on the fixings. Green beans are 99 cents a pound. Kraft Cracker Barrel cheese in 8- to 10-ounce bars are $2.50, plus there are Print A Coupon savings at Shaws.com. Hood ice cream in 48- to 56-ounce “half-gallons” are $2.50, and there may be a manufacturer’s coupon. Birds Eye frozen vegetables in 1-pound bags are $1, plus there’s a $1 off four bags manufacturer’s coupon to use.

Hannaford has frozen Marval turkeys at 47 cents a pound, limit one. Bunches of fresh asparagus are $1.99 a pound. Half-gallons of Hannaford premium orange juice are $2, and 12-packs of Heineken, Corona, Blue Moon or Sam Adams are $9.99. Finally, varieties of 8-inch pies, including pumpkin and pecan, are $3.

Stop & Shop has its brand of frozen pie crusts (two) at $2, plus you can look for 1-pound boxes of Domino sugar for $1 and cans of Carnation evaporated milk at $1.25, and then use manufacturer’s coupons under $1, which will be doubled.

Finally, in old news, Market Basket’s two-week circular is in its second week. Here were some items I mentioned in last week’s blog plus a couple of things I missed first go-around: Carando roast beef at $4.99 a pound, half-gallons of Hood egg nog for $2.99, 34.5-ounce containers of Maxwell House coffee for $5.99, 9- to 12-ounce bags of New England Coffee for $2.50, Bigelow special teas in 16- to 20-count boxes for $2.50, large pears for 99 cents a pound, and bunches of celery for $1.29. What I missed last week were six-roll packs of store brand paper towels and 16-roll packs of bathroom tissue for $3.33.

Happy Thanksgiving.
