Meat and potato deals and more this week

Filed under Savvy Shopper by sherman smith at 11:55 pm

Back to basics seems to be the theme this week at a number of area supermarkets and drug stores.

Five Market Basket stores in Greater Nashua are continuing, for the third week, the celebration of the grand reopening of the West Side Plaza store. Among the meat and potato specials are boneless sirloin tip steak or kabobs for $3.99 a pound and a 10-pound bag of all-purpose potatoes for $1.99. A pound of Land O Lake butter is priced at $2 (and use manufacturer’s coupons). Other good Market Basket deals are bananas at 39 cents a pound, heads of California cauliflower for $2, 1-pound bags of peas, corn, French and green beans and mixed veggies for $1, 16-count Kellogg’s Pop Tarts for $2 and 12-packs of Smuttynose ale for $9.99.

Stop & Shop is selling Shady Brook Farms frozen turkeys (limit one) at 59 cents a pound. The supermarket is also selling sirloin steak tips for $3.99 a pound. Edy’s ice cream in 48- to 56-ounce containers is $2.50.

Hannaford has broccoli crowns for 99 cents a pound.

Shaw’s is selling 16-ounce packages of its brand of butter for $1.88 (limit four) through Monday. Through Thursday, the supermarket is selling Post cereal at five boxes for $10, and there’s also an offer for a $5 saving at Gift Card Mall. There’s also an ad for saving $10 on fresh turkey on your next visit if you spend $25 on participating Kraft products; see www.shaws.com for details. In addition, one-pound boxes of Domino sugar are $1 (and use manufacturer’s coupons, which will be doubled under 99 cents at Shaw’s). Finally, 1-pound bags of Birds Eye veggies (in selected varieties) are $1, plus look for manufacturer’s coupons, too.

Walgreen has a 5-pound bag of Domino sugar at $1.99 with store coupon (limit two). Maxwell House instant coffee, in 8-ounce jars, is $3.99 (limit two). Jars of Jif peanut butter are three for $5 (limit three), and look for manufacturer’s coupons. Nestle semi-sweet morsels are $1.99 with store coupon (limit three). Progresso soup in 18.5- or 19-ounce cans are four for $5 (limit four) and use a manufacturer’s coupon. Reach dental floss and Prevent toothbrushes are 99 cents with store coupons (limit three) and there may be manufacturer’s coupons.

Finally, CVS’ ExtraBucks will reduce the cost of Fructis shampoo, conditioner or styler to 99 cents and Palmolive dish liquid to 49 cents. The drug store chain has an enticing offer for folks in need of L’Oreal Advanced RevitaLift Antiwrinkle serum in a 1-ounce tube; it’s free after $11.99 back in ExtraBucks. I like items advertised as free, but I’m choosing to pass on the “free after $1.59 in ExtraBucks” offer for a liter of Glaceau Smart water.
