Fewer bargains overall but some to celebrate
Filed under Savvy Shopper by sherman smith at 3:27 pm
We look for bargains some weeks, and there seem to be few among the goods on our shopping lists. That’s why it may be wise to buy more than one item on special, if we’d have room to store it and it wouldn’t go to waste.
This week appears to be a lean one for sales among area drugstores, supermarkets and some retailers. We are seeing fewer everyday bargains but some Christmas items already. Is it just me or is this a bit early since we haven’t even had Thanksgiving turkey yet?
There are some things to add to our lists: Market Basket is marking the second week to celebrate the grand reopening of its West Side Plaza store in Nashua with some good prices at five area markets. The top specials include a dozen large eggs for 99 cents, store brand English muffin six-packs for 50 cents, large heads of Romaine lettuce for 79 cents, stem cluster tomatoes for 99 cents a pound and haddock fillets for $3.99 a pound. In addition, all Market Baskets are selling Tropicana half-gallons for $2.50 and big containers (27.8 to 33.9 ounces) of Folgers coffee.
Shaw’s is selling bigger containers (33 to 39 ounces) of Maxwell House coffee also for $5.99 as well as fresh asparagus for $1.88. In addition, if you spend $25 on Kraft products there, you’ll get a coupon for a free big Maxwell House coffee on your next purchase.
Hannaford’s has rib and sirloin end pork chops in value packs for $1.39 a pound, boneless skinless chicken breast for $1.89 a pound and McIntosh apples in tote bags for 69 cents a pound.
About the only drugstore specials I’d cross the street for are a couple of items at CVS: first, three containers of Pantene Pro-V shampoo and conditioners (12-6 to 13.5 ounces) for $7.99 after $2 in ExtraBucks (and there are probably manufacturer’s coupons to use), and second, a 4.2-ounce tube of Crest Pro-Health Whitening toothpaste free after $3.49 in ExtraBucks.
Two other specials in retailers’ fliers caught my eye. Target is selling any size Home cotton flannel sheet set for $14.99 – at what the ad says is “Our lowest price ever.” That sounds good to me.
Finally, a Searsbook flier for Sears.com that looks like it belonged in newspapers in Washington and Oregon state listed great deals on some Kenmore small kitchen appliances, some cookware sets and an eight-piece roaster set – all touted as the “Lowest price of the season.” Furthermore, inside a plug said “Click to curbside. Order online. Pick up in store. Pocket the shipping.” The prices in the flier were good through Wednesday. Give it a click and check it out.
