Change we supermarket shoppers need

Filed under Savvy Shopper by sherman smith at 3:16 pm

Change is good this week for shoppers who live near area Hannaford supermarkets. The chain is altering its sales week from Friday-Thursday to Sunday-Saturday. That moves it off the schedule it shared with Stop & Shop and Shaw’s and on to the schedule of Market Basket and the CVS and Walgreen drug store chains.

To celebrate the switchover Hannaford is running a number of food items on sale. For example, the cost of a 5-pound bag of Maine potatoes, a 5-pound bag of yellow onions, 9-ounce varieties of Hot or Lean Pockets and 12-count packages of Hood ice cream sandwiches are $1.25 each, and savvy shoppers take note, 3- to 5-pound packages of 75 percent lean ground beef is just $1.25 a pound. Savings of half-price can be had this week.

Shaw’s also has some good deals. Assorted pork chops in packages of 3 pounds or more are $1.79 a pound. Cans of Progresso Vegetable Classics soups, such as lentil and minestrone, are $1 each, plus there are manufacturer’s coupons for $1 off four cans as well as Shaws.com Printacoupon to use. Finally, snack size candy from Hershey’s and Mars (in 11- to 19.5-ounce bags) are $1.67, and use both manufacturer’s and Shaws.com coupons to save more.

If you hurry, you can save on Halloween candy at CVS. The chain was running free after ExtraBucks specials Sunday and Monday on Brach’s corn, a pumpkin pail and a 6-inch smart light. Also, two-packs of Butler Gum toothbrushes are free after $3.99 in ExtraBucks. Excedrin in 20- to 24-count containers are $1.99 and there are $2 off or free after mail-in offer coupons out there. Finally, if you spend $10 on Pert shampoo or Sure deodorant, you’ll get $5 back in ExtraBucks, and there are coupons to use as well.

Market Basket has Scotties facial tissues in 250-count boxes for $1.50 and there are $1 off five coupons to use. Crest whitestrips in 56-count boxes are $17.99, and you can use coupons, too. Chef Boyardee canned pasta in 15-ounce cans are $1, and manufacturer’s coupons are out there. Planters dry-roasted peanuts in 16- to 20-ounce jars are $1.99. And Chobani Greek yogurt in 6-ounce containers are $1, and there are $1 off coupons out there.

Finally, Goodyear stores in Greater Boston, including Nashua and Lowell, are running a Castrol GTX oil-change special (with coupon) for $14.95 through Oct. 31. That includes five quarts of oil and a basic filter. Disposal costs bump the price up to $18, but that’s still probably $5 off most other special prices and will keep your motor humming for another 5,000 miles.
