I’m all lost in the supermarket deals

Filed under Savvy Shopper by sherman smith at 3:47 pm

This week’s sales circulars suggest it’s a better time to be looking for deals at supermarkets than drugstores or retail stores.

There appear to be bargains at area Hannaford, Shaw’s and Stop & Shop markets.

You need look no further than the cover of the Hannaford flier to find good prices: whole young Grade A chicken is 77 cents a pound, tote bags of McIntosh apples are 69 cents a pound and Hormel cooked ham is $2.79 a pound.

At Shaw’s, you’ll find cans of Campbell’s soup in the 15.4-ounce Microwave Bowl and 10.75-ounce Soup at Hand containers priced at 10 for $10 or $1 each, and there are manufacturer’s coupons to use, too. New England Coffee in 8- to 12-ounce bags are four for $10 or $2.50 each, and there may be manufacturer’s coupons. Or you could the www.Shaws.com Web site and use the Print a Coupon software. Finally, on the back of the flier is a “Save $3 when you purchase $10 of participating General Mills products” through Thursday.

The cover of the Market Basket flier has center cut pork chops priced at $1.99 a pound, its brand of premium ham (Black Forest, maple and brown sugar) at $3.99 a pound, sweet red peppers for 99 cents a pound and Atlantic salmon fillets for $5.99 a pound. There are also multipacks of Charmin and Bounty listed, but I think you can get a better deal on smaller packs, with maybe four to eight rolls, on which you can use a $1 off manufacturer’s coupon. Inside the flier you’ll find Luisa’s three-layer fiesta dips at $2.50 each and 22-ounce loaves of Pepperidge Farm Farmhouse breads for $2 (look for a coupon, too). Finally, on the back of the flier are specials on 3-pound bags of McIntosh apples at $2.49 and fall squash at 49 cents a pound.

There are also a couple of deals in the CVS and Walgreen fliers. CVS is giving $1.50 back in ExtraBucks on larger packages of Carefree and Stayfree pads (and look for coupons). Manual or power Gillette Fusion razors are $4.99 after $5 in ExtraBucks, and there was a $4 off coupon in the Sunday Telegraph. CVS also offers $2 in ExtraBucks on a purchase of two of certain Colgate toothpaste tubes or toothbrushes. Here again, you can usually get either a single tube of Crest or Colgate free after ExtraBucks and a $1 off coupon if you watch.

Walgreen has the same deal on Fusion razors with the final cost $1 after the manufacturer’s coupon and its RegisterReward of $4. There’s also Extreme Energy two-packs, Rimmel Foundation and L’Oreal Cleanser free after mail-in- rebate. And the final sweet deal is a coupon for a 5-pound bag of Domino sugar for $1.99 (limit two) and there may be coupons to use.
