Pickings for bargains slim this week

Filed under Savvy Shopper by sherman smith at 1:03 am

What are we to do when there are so few good bargains out there? It’s simple: Wait till next week for savings and be happy we don’t have to drive somewhere to sweat and shop. In this heat, staying home and snacking or nibbling are good uses of down time.

Some bargains, though, shouldn’t be missed this week.

For example, bananas are below 49 cents again; Market Basket has them priced at 39 cents. Heluva Good onion dip is on sale there at $2 for 24-ounce containers, and there are manufacturer’s coupons for $1 off two containers. The supermarket chain is also selling Turkey Hill iced tea half-gallons for $1, and there are instant coupons that drop the price of Cavit and Columbia Crest wines to $5. For the seafood lovers, lobsters this week are priced at $6 a pound and steamer clams at $4, both savings of $1.

Shaw’s has specials on 7-UP, A&W and Sunkist, though you must buy five 12-packs (for $10) to get the $2 price. Also, Florida’s Natural Premium orange and grapefruit juices are selling at $2 for half-gallons. The supermarket chain’s circular also tempts shoppers to save even more by visiting its Web site, shaws.com, and printing Internet coupons. (Though I have a rewards card, I couldn’t get my browser to allow printing coupons.) Its Print a Coupon should let you lower the price on $2 packages of Kraft shredded cheese and $1 boxes of Pasta Roni or Rice A Roni. Good luck.

Finally, Walgreens is selling Energizer batteries in various sizes and quantities or a recharger for $9, and there should be manufacturer’s coupons to use, too. Schick disposal razors are $4 after a $2 instant coupon, and there are manufacturer’s coupons. And a Register Reward can be had for buying two packages of Kotex pads, tampons or pantiliners.

The Savvy Shopper also appears in The Telegraph on the first and third Wednesday of each month.
