Breathing easier with good deals

Filed under Savvy Shopper by sherman smith at 3:05 pm

Every time I open a flier and find what seems to be surprisingly low-priced items, I count myself lucky. If I see, for example, a brand of beer I bought three or six months ago advertised at that same sale price, I breathe a sigh of relief. The same relief comes when I see containers of orange juice (from Florida) or fruits and veggies (from the Gulf or West coasts) priced what they were months ago. We’ll see if that trend holds – and breathe sighs each week it does.

Speaking of low-priced OJ, this week’s Market Basket flier advertises Tropicana half-gallons for $2.50. Other values in the flier are pineapples for $2.50, a variety of different types of apples for $1 a pound, quarts of Gatorade for 80 cents, 12-packs of Snapple for $5, whole BBQ chickens for $4, 12-ounce bags of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee for $4, and yes, mmm, beer, with Red Hook or Beck’s 12-packs at $10.

Target is advertising select varieties of Kellogg’s cereal at five boxes for $11, plus a $5 Target gift card thrown in.

Looking for an inexpensive but decent-looking sound system for those Saturday nights watching DVDs? Circuit City is selling a 1,000 Watt Dolby Surround Sound 5.1 home theater system from Samsung (Web ID HTZ310), with a single-disc CD/DVD player and 1,080p upconversion (HDMI), as well as MP3 compatibility and an iPod dock for $200, a savings of $30.

Walgreens is offering Pepsi 12-packs at four for $11, plus one free with the coupon in the weekly flier. The drug store chain is also selling its Zipperseal brand of plastic bags at $1 for 20- or 25-pack storage bags and 50-pack sandwich bags.

Finally, CVS is selling 4-ounce tubes of Colgate toothpaste for $1 after $2 in ExtraBucks; look to use a manufacturer’s coupon, too. Containers of Aussie shampoo in a variety of sizes are $1 after $2 in ExtraBucks. And four SoyJoy nutrition bars are free after $4 in ExtraBucks.

The Savvy Shopper also appears in The Telegraph on the first and third Wednesday of each month. Sherman Smith, Telegraph copy editor, can be reached at 594-6420, or at ssmith@nashuatelegraph.com.
