Call me an old fuddy-duddy if you like, but I have to say I am not a fan of what appears to be a growing trend to obscure part of the Telegraph's nameplate with some bit of art work, usually from one of the teaser headlines that run at the top of Page 1.
In recent days, the fine Gothic script that identifies the newspaper as "The Telegraph" has been decorated with (or, some would say, obscured by) such items as what looks like a metal bra, a snake, an ice cream sandwich and the cover of (Read More...) If you're reading this blog, then it's likely you have an interest in newspapers in general, as well as the Telegraph in particular. So I thought I'd share with you a few book recommendations - books about the newspaper business.
One of the classics in the field is called "The Kingdom and The Power" by Gay Talese. It's the story of the New York Times and its influence on America in genral and the newspaper business in particular. When I read it, I was struck by how familiar the issues he covered were. A friend stopped me in the hallway at work the other day to say that in his opinion, there were too many errors, or typos, in headlines in the Telegraph. Well, that hadn't really jumped out at me, so I started keeping an eye out for this issue, and it seems to me that there are not a huge number of typo'ed headlines in the Telegraph. Not that there aren't any...but having written my share of headlines, I know that it is far too easy to see what you expect to see rather than what is really there...which leads to a lot of the mistakes in headlines that get by everyone and actually get published.
