Darn, I missed that story...

I try to keep up with the news, but it seems like I am always falling behind. Then I have to go do some research to try to fill in the gaps. Case in point: The week after the recent election, I read a column in the Telegraph about how failure to solve the school funding problem, now that they had a majority in the Legislature and controlled the governor's office, could be the Democrats' undoing.

I read that, and I thought: "Hm, I must have missed the story the day after the election about how the failure to solve the school funding crisis had been the Republicans' undoing." So I went back and looked and...no story.

So now I am confused. The Republicans had controlled the Legislature for all the years that the school funding crisis has existed and for two years they also held the governorship. But apparently failure to solve the school funding issue was not a problem. I guess that means that if we'd only kept the Legislature in GOP hands we could have gone on indefinitely with the school funding crisis unsolved and no one would have been upset.

But now that the Democrats are in charge, they have to solve the issue or be "undone?" The logic of this somehow escapes me...

It's a little like the recent "analysis" piece that claimed that the Democrats taking over the legislature was Gov. John Lynch's worst nightmare come true and now he had to just hope that those loopy Dems wouldn't pass all kinds of harebrained schemes now that they control the house and senate.

Considering all the years that the Republicans have controlled the Legislature and the governor's office in past years, I guess it is just a good thing that Republican legislators just never have any crazy ideas. Or at least I don't recall ever reading that a Republican governor's worst nightmare was a Republican Legisature and Executive Council.

Finally, while we are on the subject of politics: Can someone ask our two U.S. Senators, John Sununu and Judd Gregg, how lucky they feel that neither of them was running for re-election this year?
