There were few in Trempealeau County who didn’t know him, or know of him. Residents of Whitehall, Wisconsin, remember the basketball coach and teacher well. Basketball players throughout the Dairyland Conference remember him. Referees from decades of games probably feared him, or at least his temper when calls didn’t go his way. His name was Ken Stellpflug. He passed away in July.
Why can’t parents just keep their mouths shut and let the coaches coach? It was all over the laps the coach made the man’s son run for being late for football practice.
Can you imagine coaching a high school football team to a 14-0 conference record and still not be illegible to make the playoffs? That’s exactly what happened to the Whitehall (Memorial) High School Norsemen football team in 1979, my junior year.
Here’s a few pictures from the Pinkerton Academy vs. Manchester Memorial football game last Saturday in Derry. Not the greatest field conditions in the rain, and the game didn’t go the Crusaders way. But, with several underclassmen in the starting lineups, they are a team building and hopefully improving as the season goes on.
Recreational youth sports leagues are an essential part of any town, no matter the population. They are not only the feeder programs for junior high and high school teams, but also play a key role in the healthiness of the town’s youngest generation.
I wasn’t there when team manager, A.J. Jackson injured his ankle walking up a set of stairs in flip flops. But, I can say it wasn’t his fault for not moving fast enough when my son, Brandon ripped a foul ball down the third base line, hitting A.J.’s ankle in the same spot. Double-Ouch!
So, just how to you tell your kids you’re out of a job, can’t make the car payment or you need to dip into their college funds to cover the mortgage? Those would be tough to swallow for children of any age.
Congratulations to the Auburn Village School baseball team on their championship game victory over Wilton. The Braves defeated the Warriors 6-0 Thursday, May 29, to finish a perfect season with a record of 12-0 in the Tri-County League for Class S junior high schools.
