No more flu vaccine at Dartmouth Hitchcock - bring on the H1N1

Have you had your flu shot(s) yet? If not, good luck finding one.
For the past two years I’ve been offered a flu shot during a regular physical exam in the fall at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Manchester. I took advantage of it, and have been sick for two years now.
A month or so ago I set up an appointment for my yearly physical. Since the soonest appointment they had open was in December, I asked about receiving the flu vaccine(s) sooner. They said then that they were out and expecting another shipment soon. So, I was placed on a calling list.
I discovered a message on my answering machine from either Friday or early Saturday. I was excited, they received the vaccines and I needed to call in for an appointment. So, this morning that’s exactly what I did, and was told that all the vaccines were gone, and that they wouldn’t be receiving any more. Thanks I said. Can’t wait until I walk in to the clinic soon sneezing and coughing. Why did they bother calling me?
I went to the Dartmouth Hitchcock web site to read more about the flu and shots. The flu vaccine information page has plenty of links to inform you about the illness. But, as you click on the links for the flu shot clinics, you’ll find messages that say they’re cancelled due to a delay in shipment. That’s not what I was told.
The flu vaccine info page will also tell you that people between the ages of 19 and 50 are not in the danger zone. Now, I’m not sure how old my friend Dean is who was hit pretty hard with the flu this weekend, but I’m not gonna stop worrying about it just because I haven’t hit the big 5-O yet.
The Department of Health & Human Services does offer some tips to help prevent the illness. But, it’s tough to avoid the germ as a newspaper photographer and a dad of a high schooler. As the flu spreads through the school my son is bound to pick it up somewhere - whether it’s the athletic activities or in the classroom. I meet so many people throughout my day, and visit many places, including schools, that chances are good I will be a victim of the piggy flu sometime soon.
