Is dropping the “F-Bomb” a new form of celebration?

Sportsmanship does not begin with the letter “F.” In fact there are few words used in sports that begin with the 6th letter of the alphabet. So, why has the “F-Bomb” become so popular in pro and high school sports? If you haven’t figured out the word yet, it doesn’t stand for fake, football, forward, first, or fast. The four-letter word is described by Webster’s Dictionary as an obscene word used to describe an act of copulation.

Both Bishop Guertin and Pinkerton Academy had unsportsmanlike conduct penalties called against them this past weekend for players using the “F-Bomb.” But, what I don’t understand, is why? Both penalties came as a result of their team scoring a touchdown, or making big yardage. Shouldn’t the other team be upset.

I was flipping channels on the television last weekend and read the lips of a pro baseball coach offering multiple forms of the “F-Bomb” to the umpire, who calmly tossed the coach from the game.

Yes, the word’s been around for a long time. But, that’s not a reason to use it, especially in public and around youngsters. I will admit the word may have slipped from my mouth a few times in my lifetime, but I hope it only slipped out when I was in pain, or not around others.

Let’s clean up the language around the playing fields people!
