Dirt, sweat and grass - Yum! - Take a drink…

That’s no Gatorade or Powerade recipe for a sports drink. I’m sure my coaches weren’t thinking of e-coli bacteria, deadly viruses or poisoning when my teammates and I at Whitehall High School in Wisconsin, had to chug water during a break from football practice using an outdoor hose faucet and our football helmets. Looking back almost 30 years, that’s just the way it was back then. Now-a-days the kids are spoiled.
With grass, sweat, dirt, and other stuff floating inside our “dual-purpose” helmets, we Noresemen drank as fast as we could and poured the rest over our heads. After all, the entire football team only had a few minutes for the water break, and the water was pouring out the air holes in the top of the helmet faster than we could drink. Looking back, I might have been safer being an underclassmen who never had a chance for a slimy drink during our two-a-day practices in the August heat.
I was at my son’s football scrimmages last week against Bishop Guertin High School in Nashua, and at home vs. Souhegan. I noticed our Manchester Memorial boys have a new water dispenser. It’s a huge water tank with handy spray hoses coming from the top. Just add some flavor and I’d be all set.
A few of the Memorial players were sitting behind me at Stellos Stadium last week, and I told them the story above. I got that “ya sure ya betcha” look from them and they just smiled.
