What do you do when Little League is over?

Is your son or daughter finishing up their Little League baseball or softball season? Are you wondering where to go from here? Do they have the potential to play high school sports or beyond? Have you looked into AAU teams yet?
If you can answer at least three of these questions with a yes, then the following may help you decide whether to take their game up a notch. AAU is the umbrella organization for many different sports. Each is divided into age groups, such as 13U (13 years old and under).
There are many baseball and softball teams from New England, and I have provided links to some of those below. Some of these organizations are stronger in training than others. I urge you to ask around before trying out for any team. Find a player who has gone through a year with the team you’re interested in, and ask them questions about costs, number of players on roster, minimum number of games played, and training.
If you as parents, have minimal finances for sports, or gasp when paying $40 for your child to play recreational ball, check your heart medication now. Playing on an AAU team isn’t cheap. You will have team membership fees ranging from a few hundred dollars to nearly $2,000, and that’s just the start of the costs. Add in baseball or softball bats (range of $50 to $500), helmets, cleats, batting gloves, private pitching and lessons (around $40 a pop), tournament fees (we paid around $500 this year) and traveling expenses for tournaments. Pretty soon that $40 bucks we paid for a tshirt and hat for Little league seams like a drop in the bucket.
