Scalped by BG ticket prices

So what do you get for three bucks these days? How about a pound of propane to heat my house, a gallon of milk, a subscription to The Telegraph, but not admission into a basketball game at Bishop Guertin High School. That will cost you FIVE BIG ONES.

I attended a pair of basketball games this week between Bishop Guertin and Manchester Memorial high schools. As I sat in the bleachers to take a few pictures of the players, I heard some grumbling from the Memorial fans around me.

It was about the admission price the school was charging to watch the junior varsity, and varsity games. Some of them shelled out $10 per couple to watch the JV game. In these days of recession and tight budgets, BG doesn’t seem to feel shame in emptying their fans’ wallets. Maybe that’s why there was a small crowd from the hometown school!

I wondered why the high price tickets, since it wasn’t tournament time yet, when the NHIAA sets the prices for admission. All the other schools I’ve been to charge $3 to watch the games. Some schools charge nothing for the JV games.

Could the extra charge be an involuntary offering to the Catholic School? It certainly wasn’t for the half-time entertainment, since there were no cheerleaders at the game. And I hope it wasn’t to cover the salary of the game’s announcer.

I cannot believe you're complaining about FIVE BIG ONES as opposed to THREE BIG ONES elsewhere! That's a whole TWO BIG ONES. As for those that try to avoid paying by attending the JV game - sorry that BG is so efficient at collecting their gate - maybe your school could learn a thing or two. Come back to a game outside of vacation week to gauge the size of the normal crowd - that is if you can afford the extra TWO BIG ONES. :-)

Perhaps a little investigative reporting as opposed to blogging to stir controversy would get your answer. Did you even try to contact the BG AD or Athletic office to get an answer as to why it's $5 as opposed to $3? Of course you may get your answer next year as Manchester and Nashua schools look for revenue streams in order to support the cost of their sports which are under attack by the budget scalpels.

The NHIAA sets the admission price at 3 bucks... yet BG feels it needs to charge 5 bucks.. After all , they need that extra 2 bucks to recruit
