Weird Names For Sports Teams

Can you imagine playing on teams called the Webbies, White Mules or Banana Slugs? Maybe you are more of a Geoduck or a Stumpie!
Those are some of the team names I found on this web site http://www.smargon.net/nicknames/. It lists hundreds of teams’ names and the colleges they represent.
The Webbies hail from Webb Institute in Glan Cove, N.Y. I can only imagine laptops lined up along the field. The coach calls in a play to the quarterback via I.M. through the tiny personal PC strapped to his arm.
Then there’s the White Mules of Colby College in Waterville, Maine. No wonder their jerseys say “Colby” on them. It’s better than their white mule figure with Jack… spelled over it. Can you imagine the things they’re called by the opposing fans!
Check out the University of California - Santa Cruz Banana Slugs. They have the coolest slug graphics I’ve ever seen on a college web site. The name kinda “sticks” in my mind!
You techno-geeks might be surprised to learn that the Geoducks do not hail from an MIT or tech college. They are from Evergreen State University in Olympia, Washington. It’s a liberal arts and sciences school.
And the Stumpies, you guessed it, came from the State University of New York - College of Environmental Science & Forestry. I’ll be you were ready to guess they were from a school for the “not-so-gifted with height.”
If you think those are weird, what if you were a female basketball player on the “Jumbos,” from Tufts University in Medford, Mass., sporting an elephant logo on your jersey.
Now, if you are an atheist, there are two schools where you can play ball. You’ll have your choice of being a “Demon Deacon” or a “Battling Bishop.” I doubt you’d go to either school to be a pastor or priest. And, neither school requires you to follow the dark side. The Demon Deacons are from Wake Forest University in North Carolina, and the Battling Bishops represent two Wesleyan Colleges in North Carolina and Ohio.
