Girls against the boys. I’ll bet on the…

If you’re the parent of a single child, have you ever wondered if your family life would have been different raising a child of the opposite sex? Are you one of those couples who has enough sons for a basketball team, and still trying for a girl?

As the parent of one very active teenage boy, I’m happy, and sad we stopped at one (uno) child. He would not have the array of sports opportunities he has now, and we would have to buy a second refrigerator.

In the “old days” families had several kids, so that there were enough to do the chores, work the fields, or take over the family business. Some still live that way. After all, have six little tax exemptions running around the house leave more money in the wallet - sort of.

Occassionally I’ll run across names like: Pat, Bobby, Leslie, Kim, Kelly, Chris, Jean, Jackie, and Joe. I wonder if their parents had picked those names before they were born, knowing they could pick the alternate spellings, depending on whether the baby was a boy, or a girl. Think about your own name. Were your parents putting up the pink drapes, or buying Hot Wheels before you were born? Maybe you were a boy who had to live with flowered wallpaper, put up before in your room before certain body parts were visible on the ultrasound.

Guys, have you ever wondered why you got Barbies and Easy-Bake Ovens for Christmas, instead of Tonka trucks? Gals, did your parents dress you in boys clothes, cut your hair short and take you to NASCAR races before you could crawl? Looking back now, do you wonder what was up with that?

Here’s a top 10 list of reasons to have a boy:

1) Less moody.

2) Carry on the family name.

3) Someone to help do the hard yardwork.

4) Less picky to clothes shop for.

5) Dad can buy the toys he always wanted, and never got!

6) More opportunites to play pro sports - or for parents to dream about it anyway!

7) Someone for dad to pass down that electric train to.

8) Dad has someone to wrestle.

9) Less worry when dating time comes.

10) More convenient when you need to “use the woods” for a break during baseball practice.

Top 10 reasons to have a girl:

1) More fun for mom to clothes shop for.

2) Less hard contact on the athletic fields for moms to worry about.

3) Better listeners, and easier to coach.

4) Cheaper to feed!

5) Much prettier uniforms.

6) Fight less in games.

7) Mom gets to buy the toys she always wanted and never got.

8) Cleaner to live with - usually.

9) Dad has someone to sew buttons on his shirts.

10) Free haircuts if you send them to cosmetology school!
