Music and athletics; tuning out the world
Filed under General, Music by bob hammerstrom at 6:00 am
Not much has changed over the years as far as music, kids and athletics. Yes, the songs are different and the music players have shrunk, but the reasons for athletes to listen to music remains the same.
I can recall the “good ole days” when 8-tracks took over the record album industry. As time went on, cassettes came out, then CD’s, and DVD’s. It wasn’t that long ago, that the stereotypical images of city youth hauling giant boom boxes on their shoulders were around, followed by the “Walk-Mans.” Now the kids all wear “ear buds” connected to tiny I-Pods, and other music players smaller than a credit card. The sounds produced is amazing, and they hold hundreds of songs.
When my son received his first I-Pod for Christmas, we loaded it with songs from my good ole days. There were hits from: Boston, Loverboy, Eagles, Foreigner, Stix, Kiss, etc… The late 70’s and 80’s produced a lot of great Rock-n-roll that still plays on the radio stations. He’s since been downloading today’s tunes to replace my favorites.
No matter what they are listening to, the reasons why kids play music are similar to those of previous generations. It’s all about tuning out the world. As soon as those ear buds go in, the questions and lectures from mom and dad are tuned out. Homework is forgotten, and they are free to let their minds roam.
But don’t chuck your 8-track and cassette players after reading this blog, unless you’re embarassed for someone to see you outdated. Hold on to them 100 years, and see what ebay brings then! What’s your child listening to?
