Coach in the stands

Are you one of those parents who finds their blood pressure rising on the day of your child’s game? Do you find yourself pacing the side of the field when you brought a perfectly comfortable chair to the game? Do you lose your voice by the end of a game? You’re not alone.
Most of us get caught up in the heat of the moment as we watch our children playing sports. One of the mothers on my son’s AAU baseball team turns away every time her son is up to bat. We tease her about it, but she is superstitious.
My son, Brandon has been involved in sports year-around since his Little League days. He plays soccer, basketball, baseball, and football. My wife, Nancy used to stay calm when he was younger, but she seems to have learned from me how to coach from her spot in the bleachers. I have calmed down more lately, finding that it’s counter-productive telling players how to play the game. That’s the coach’s job. I trust their judgement.
The coaches for the NH Grizzlies traveling baseball team told us to keep away from the dugout. We cheer on the kids, but we leave the coaching to them. It’s much more enjoyable for everybody that way, and my blood pressure stays down. I suggest videotaping your child’s game. You will be surprised by the comments picked up on the microphone, and that will teach you to stick to the cheering.
Are you an armchair coach?
