Review: Sia's album has real problems

"Some People Have Real Problems" by Sia (Hear Music) - Out now

If Sia Furler's voice sounds a bit familiar, it's probably because the Aussie-born songstress sounds like a lot of singers.

A little Fiona Apple here, a little Nelly Furtado there. It probably doesn't help, either, that the music and lyrics are a bit generic and song styles a bit too widely varied.

And without a real common link between songs, it's hard to get too emotionally involved.

While she seems pretty raw, Sia has been around for a few years, albeit in Great Britain. Even after a few solo albums and several tracks with Zero 7, she's still pretty unknown in the states, though.

And maybe she's just trying to do a bit too much, because at times, she just tends to sound overmatched. Other times, the music just can't match her powerful, smoky voice. Even a guest-spot from Beck can't save the album.

There are times, though, when it all comes together beautifully, such as with "You Have Been Loved" and "I Go to Sleep." And at the very least, other tunes like "Little Black Sandals" tend to get stuck in your head. Too bad it just sounds like something I've heard somewhere before.

I agree [Reply]

With some of the stuff I'd heard from Zero7, I was expecting more from this disc. I give it a big blah.
