Now its time for the players to shuffle (update)

Filed under college basketball by JoeM at 1:07 pm

For the last week, most of the news not relating to the Final Four has been about coaches going here and there or nowhere.

Now it’s about what players are doing - whether they are staying in school or going to the NBA. And if they’re going to the NBA, are they going all-in and hiring an agent.

Oklahoma’s Blake Griffin is the biggest name to declare, and really the least surprising. The sophomore came back for this season to try to make himself the top pick in the draft. I don’t know how he couldn’t be.

So there is no turning back for Griffin. And it’s the same for Arizona’s Chase Budinger, who is also heading into the draft, and he’s hired an agent, which means he can’t change his mind and return to the Wildcats. This one isn’t much of a surprise either.

Kentucky’s Jodie Meeks has also declared for the draft, but hasn’t hired an agent. That means if he goes through the pre-draft works and doesn’t like what he hears (as far as where he’d be drafted) he can return to Lexington.

DeJuan Blair of Pittsburgh hasn’t announced anything yet, but he’s reportedly made a decisionand will declare for the draft. However, like Meeks, Blair hasn’t yet hired an agent.

UPDATE: Blair not only announced on Wednesday that he was leaving for the NBA, but he had hired an agent, ending his college career.

For a complete list of players staying or going, go here or here.

One player that will be going to Kentuckynext season is DeMarcus Cousins, who new Wildcats coach John Calipari had recruited to play for him at Memphis. But since Cousins hadn’t signed a letter of intent yet, he’s free to change his mind and go to Lexington.

Another Memphis recruit, Xavier Henry, wanted out of his commitment to Memphis now that Calipari is gone, and it seems the school has done that. One rumor was that one way that new Tigers coach Josh Pastner could have kept Henry was by hiring the player’s dad, Carl, as director of basketball operations. Carl Henry denies that. Xavier Henry, and his brother, C.J., who was a walk-on at Memphis this year, are both weighing their options.

So with both of its big recruits possibly gone, and freshmen sensation Tyreke Evans off to the NBA, and the winningest senior class in school history gone, maybe the Memphis job wasn’t as attractive as first thought.
